80% of Qatar OFWs Fail to Develop Savings
DOHA: Eighty percent of Filipino workers in Qatar do not save for a rainy day, said Labour Attache Ricardo Sodusta, of the Philippine Overseas Labour Office.
Sodusta, who was speaking to a group of Filipino accountants yesterday at Holiday Villa, has advised his countrymen to change their ways and think about the future of their families when they decide to go back to their country for good.
“80 percent of Overseas Filipino Workers are not ready when they want to go home for good because many of them think it is never- ending employment abroad,” Sodusta who was resource speaker for the Philippine government’s re-integration programme at the event hosted by Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants-Qatar Chapter (PICPA-Qatar), said
He reminded OFWs to save a substantial part of their earnings while working abroad since, he said, in most cases it is just temporary and the security of tenure is unpredictable. He cited the cases of Filipino workers in Libya and other troubled areas in the Middle East where thousands were sent home empty-handed and faced a bleak future for their families.
