Court sentences drink-driver to 40 lashes

Court sentences drink-driver to 40 lashes

By QatarNews

The Criminal Court has sentenced an Indian Muslim to 40 lashes and ordered the suspension of his driving licence for two months for consuming liquor and driving under the influence of alcohol, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported.

The accused was captured by Al Fazaa patrols in Shabiyat Khalifa while he was parking his vehicle. The police found him to be under the influence of alcohol and also found a half-empty bottle of liquor in the car, the report states.

According to the Public Prosecution, the accused had consumed liquor and also confessed during interrogation that he was driving under the influence of alcohol, the report adds.

The accused, however, later denied that he had driven the vehicle while being drunk, a claim that was rejected by the court, according to the report.

What do you think of the ruling?

Lol Molten. Did I touch a raw nerve with you? There's no need for all your rhetorical questions, since you know exactly what I mean. Westerners and easterners get treated differently in this country, for instance the driver in this story. And by the way, I don't hate it here, I love it here. I'm not the one who the police arrest, or who gets kicked out of souq waqif, or denied entry to City Center on Fridays. My life here is great. Put your pajamas back on before you get arrested too!

You left your country , you hate Qatar , you have problem identifying yourself with the eastern region humans , if you keep gap with the society you live in what's left there in this world that you would like , snow or forest as compared to the fellow creatures ? ...................... Why am I pitiable? I'm grateful. Grateful I am a white western expat. Never in all my time in Qatar have I known a single friend get in trouble for consuming alcohol. But how many times have I heard stories about Asians, mostly Indians, getting arrested in the industrial area for drinking alcohol, or for having alcohol in their car. It's not my embassy you need to worry about. Our embassy makes sure that we don't get in trouble, because different laws apply to different people.

Khalli , We had a ghost like colleague one time , he would never talk to anybody untill his burial , if you try to cheer him up once in a three months he would ask you '' are you drunk ? '' .... so in the same way they were too happy to greet you from the core of their heart and you mistakenly assumed that they were not sober .......... forget that incident , remember my story .......... I didn't realise Molten went out drinking with his Qatari friends, and then followed them back to their cars.

As Urstruly says, if the police wanted to catch ALL the drink drivers, they just have to wait in the hotel carpark. But they don't, and we all (except for Molten) know why. Some days I just think God I'm not an Indian living in Qatar.

There's a reason alcohol hasn't been banned. It's because a lot of people like it. A lot of powerful, influential people.

Anyone can drink if they wish. But I'd prefer if they didn't get in their landcruiser and drive home after.

Qataris don't drink hahahaha. They are in the bars, but they drink coke. Or they aren't 'real' Qataris, they are Arabs wearing thobes pretending to be Qataris. Or they are there for 'business meetings'. But they don't drink any alcohol.

@Zafirah..why ban him for life? there are more worst things that happen n people get away. also, here it says Indian muslim and its mentioned in open. if someone else did it, it would have been mentioned as a Gulf national. Why hide things like that.

The thing is: They should have believed his claim as They cannot accuse him based on what he said ; as he was drunk ... that means what he said is not viable in court

he's lucky, he was not deported. should be banned from the road - for life.
