Ministry set up patrols to curb begging

The Ministry of Interior’s anti-begging cell has set up patrol teams of 48 public security personnel, both men and women, to curb the phenomenon and catch the culprits.

The crack teams have identified vulnerable areas, where there is a possibility of beggars seeking alms, to mount vigil round-the-clock and bring them to book.

The cell is part of the Criminal Research Department at the ministry, headed by Brigadier Jamal Al Kaabi.

According to police magazine (Asshurta, the Arabic word for police), the cell had been successful in curbing begging to a large extent.

It has in recent past arrested several people who were found begging.

Brigadier Al Kaabi urged citizens and expatriates to make donations to charitable organizations instead of offering alms to beggars, the daily said.

According to Brigadier Al Kaabi, beggars arrive here from overseas on visit visas and come up with newer ways to seek alms.

He said his department plays a crucial and supportive role in solving and fighting crimes by helping law-enforcement agencies in their work.

He said among the many ways in which they help law-enforcement agencies in fighting crimes is by tracking security cameras fitted on roads and highways and providing them footages. [The Peninsula]
