The Ministry of Interior has provided air tickets to more than 5,000 expatriates held up at its Search and Follow-Up Department to send them back home, a senior official said.

Brig Nasser Mohammed Al Sayed, (pictured) Director of the Department, said that the Ministry has come to the rescue of a number of inmates who could not afford to buy an air ticket to go home.

This came during a briefing to a delegation from the Amnesty International that visited the Department to know about the living condition of migrant workers there, the Qatar News Agency reported yesterday.

“Although we receive huge number of people, they are not being detained finally as the Ministry has provided air tickets to more than 5,000 people who were not able to pay for a ticket to reach their destination,” Al Sayed was quoted as saying.

Al Sayed said the Ministry was keen to implement the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations while dealing with expatriate workers who end up at the Department.

Accordingly, the ministry transferred the sponsorship of several workers when it was proved that there were subject to abuse by their sponsors.

The Department has adopted its procedures in line with the international principles which led to the voluntary surrender of a number of expatriate workers who violated the law.

Requests by such workers communicating their interest to return home have been entertained by the Department and they are sent home after completing the necessary procedures.

The Amnesty delegation was received by Al Sayed and Brig Abdullah Saqr Al Mohannadi, head of the Human Rights Department at the Ministry and other senior officials.

The delegation was told about the various measures being taken by the Department to improve the living condition of the inmates.

An office of the Public Prosecution and a court dealing with residency issues have been set up at the Department as part of the legal procedures.

The delegation toured the facilities at the Department which include separate accommodations for men and women, dining hall, hair cutting salon for men, mosque for men and women, sports and entertainment facilities, clinic, among others.

Only 100 people have been put in a block that can actually accommodate up to 150 people, the team was told.

The delegation appreciated the facilities and the interest of the ministry to improve the services at the Department, QNA reported.

When will these people stop deceiving the world? Majority of those they bought tickets for, were forced to leave qatar with serious torture. I know of those leg-cuffed and hand-cuffed , put in a cage in order to accept to leave qatar.
