Qatar Museums (QM) will launch three new projects that includes a museum focusing on sports, an orientalist museum and a children's museum.

This was revealed during a panel discussion on the role of art and creativity in bridging cultures led by Qatar Museums Chairperson HE Sheikha al Mayassa bint Hamad al Thani at the Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) on Wednesday.

The participants were given a preview of some the features of the forthcoming National Museum of Qatar, which is expected to be completed in 2016.

Mansoor bin Ebrahim al Mahmoud, Special Adviser to the Chairperson and Acting CEO at Qatar Museums, showed an artist's impression of the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, a facility that will be dedicated to celebrating the history and love of sport. The sports museum is slated to open in 2016.

Qatar's Orientalist Museum, which is expected to be completed in 2018, will focus on the creative fusion between the East and the West. The Children's Museum will offer a unique learning experience for children.

Sheikha Mayassa said the National Museum of Qatar will showcase civilisations (Latin America, North America, among others) unlike the MIA which focuses exclusively on Islamic Art.

This museum facility would also focus on exhibitions in a bid to delve deeper into specific subjects. She talked about the important role of oral history in realising the objectives of the National Museum of Qatar.

"Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, a facility that will be dedicated to celebrating the history and love of sport." Ha, ha, ha. Do they show pictures of empty football stadia there?

'Orientalist' museum doesn't sound right if the purpose of the museum is to celebrate west-east fusion. A name such as the 'weast' museum would have been more appropriate.

Here are the 1st two definitions of the word 'orientalist' that come up on Google.

1) style, artefacts, or traits considered characteristic of the peoples and cultures of Asia. (So, east only is reflected here)

2)the representation of Asia, especially the Middle East, in a stereotyped way that is regarded as embodying a colonialist attitude. (So, west over east is clearly reflected in this case)

Neither definitions apply in my humble opinion and so the name was unapproriate.

OK.. I can understand a Children's museum, but the other two are just white elephants and a means of throwing away good money
