Sales drop for Qatar's second-hand car dealers

Operators of showrooms selling used vehicles say they have been suffering a drop in sales due to a variety of reasons.

The reasons mentioned by them include the growing preference among people to sell and buy used cars through direct interactions on social media, stringent regulations on displaying vehicles as well as more general factors preventing certain people from making big purchases, according to the report.

Rida Jalal, an expatriate director of a car showroom, said free advertisements on the Internet, particularly social media, have made it easier for individuals to sell their cars directly.

They do not have to worry about factors such as rent and staff salary, which showrooms have to deal with, Jalal pointed out.

Besides, many used vehicle showrooms are unable to display - in large numbers - vehicles outside their premises due to some stringent regulations, limiting the options for customers, it was observed.

An Arab expatriate said he and many of his friends preferred buying new vehicles because payment would be done through instalments and the car would be under warranty.

On the other hand, used vehicles were often purchased cash with practically no warranty, he explained.
Mohamed al-Muhannadi, an owner of a used car showroom, stressed a more general factor behind the drop in sales - that of some expatriates being worried about unstable economic conditions in their home countries.

Further, he pointed out that acquaintances in some neighbouring countries had told him that a similar situation prevailed there as well. He, however, hoped that the market would improve. "It is normal to have ups and downs," he said.

Khalid, a manager of a showroom, also sounded pessimistic about the sales scenario and expected it to continue due to unstable circumstances in the home countries of many expatriates, the report adds. [Gulf Times]

This is also due to dealer are putting very high margin price for second hand car. They should realize this and put right price for used cars.

Other reasons is discrimination , they don't mind if the buyer is from India , Srinlanka , Pakistan or Bangladesh...this happens many places in Qatar...even if you go to some shops , they will ignore you if your above said nationality....!!!! experience is best teacher...!!!!1

Agree with karkey. Best option is to buy direct. Check Qatar Living - lots of cars listed regularly. And you can often get a good deal. Just got to be careful (which applies to buying from an official used cal dealer also, and based on recent reports sometimes you can't even trust new!!).

I bought a second hand car from an official showroom and I started suffering many problems, From day 1. I've spent so much money on it, to keep it in full order, and made everything in official garage. When I went for 100k mileage service they made me huge bill and I decided to sell it to a 2nd hand car dealer without doing reparations and losing half value of the car after just 1 year and half. I just bough directly a brand new car with 5 years warranty and free service for 1 year. I think I will never buy a second hand car again in Qatar, if I cannot even trust the official showrooms.

Used car dealer may give own waranty for atleast 6 month to make more trust on customer who is buying second hand vehicle. Some of the advertisement are strange like " Sale of one year old car but no waranty" , how it could be ? That means something happend to new car and they are trying to find a fool from local market.

We also see from social web that somebody change the km reading and selling the car. Becasue of this reason i went to buy a new car. No worry now, warranty for three year etc.

One other factor could be that most car salesmen are snakes and would sell their own grandmother for a profit
