I use my bike to office on a daily basis , 4 km one way . There are bike tracks along the way till my office . its pretty safe if you follow all the rules while crossing the signals etc , and stick to the bike track if its available . best way to get some exercise done while commuting. oh yea! i carry my office clothes in my bag and change from my office :P , carry a deo , you will need it . in summer if you go early in the morning the sun isnt that hot .

Also know the rules of riding a bike here. Traffic Department has specifically issued several rules such as:

You need to have a Helmet, reflecting jacket, rearview mirror (on the handlebar), horn, front light, rear reflector, dynamo (to power the front light), brakes, air pump (to be fixed on the down tube) and reflector on the sides of the pedals.

Also avoid riding on sidewalks and not keeping to the right side of the road.

Be careful, be safe!

Not all roads here have a bicycle lane, you may find yourself at the bottom of drainage holes. and as what others said, you might be a victim of road rage. although there are some places that biking is allowed, like at ras abu abboud(beside old airport fence). but to get in there, I saw some bikers that are carrying their bikes on their cars.

Also, make sure your lungi doesn't get entangled between the chains of your bike and you fall from the bike....:(

Britexpat: Your forgot to add "Also, make sure your lungi does not gets lifted up with the air flowing in at high speed and covers up you face while driving." That could be dangerous from all aspects!

Yes you can bike, although it can be dangerous since most drivers aren't used to having bikes around. Its also very hot.

Tips:

Be wary of idiotic drivers

Be wary of missing manhole covers and potholes

Be careful if riding on pavement

Don't dress in latex in public

Ensure your lungi does not catch the chain
