Housing allowance

Greetings Everyone. I have been offered a job in Qatar with an annual housing allowance of QAR 150K. We are a family of four and currently reside in a three bedroom house in a nice area of Tampa, Florida in the US. I would like to know what kind of accommodations this housing allowance could provide us in Qatar. At the very least we would like to maintain the same kind of housing, and do not wish to have to cover additional housing costs from my base salary.

Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Vincent

@Mary Catherine - You certainly make very good points about cost of education and inflation. Although I am getting an annual school reimbursement, I know it is not enough to cover both of my kids' education at the American schools in Doha. We would like to, at the very minimum, maintain the same lifestyle we lead here, and thus my concern about the housing allowance.

With a bit of research online about properties, it is becoming more and more evident that a 150K housing allowance would not get us a 3-bedroom house in a nice location of Doha. Such accommodations seem to start at roughly 200K+.

@Molten Metal, leaving the kids and wife behind is not an option. We are not desperate for a job or money, and I pray we never will. The family goes wherever I go :)

It seems I have to go to the negotiation table and see what I could do about the housing and school allowances. These two are without a doubt are deal breakers.

Vincent , Leave your kids & wife behind , think about your professional future ............. if you like the basic salary then everything else is immaterial ............. earn money for 10 years then you can go back to your place ......... you may visit your family two / three times a year or call them when kids have scool holidays ............. let your wife be responsible for the home & kids' education & upbringing ..................... Welcome to Qatar ........... Join atonce ....................... Good Luck .............. Joys ...................

Rents are high and rising. You also need to learn about school fees, also high and finding places can be very difficult depending on the school and age of the children.

If housing and education costs are not fully covered on an ongoing basis (ie keep pace with inflation) stay home.

A "nice" house would cost between QR 12,000 to 25,000 per month depending on the location.
