Motorist killed after a container fell on his car

A driver was killed when his car was smashed by a container that fell off a trailer when it lost its balance while making a turn on the Doha Corniche Sunday afternoon.

Witnesses said the accident took place near the Doha Port signal around 4 pm while the container was trying to make a turn. The container was carrying scaffolding materials inside

The driver of the car, a 45-year-old expat, was said to be the sole occupant of his vehicle at the time of the accident.

Two similar tragedies had been reported from Qatar over the past 15 years, a long-time resident recalled.

"The first was in the year 2000 when three or four occupants of a taxi, including its driver, were killed when a container fell on them near the then Ain Khalid roundabout on Salwa Road.

The second happened a few years ago at Mamoura and claimed one life. [Gulf Times]

What should the authorities do to make sure such accidents don't occur again?

Yes it the fault of driver. The signal there is only for few seconds. The trucks coming from inside the port is bringing goods for the whole of qatar should be increased to few minutes from seconds after waiting period for nearly 15 minutes. The impatient speedy driver took curve and it might have lost balance.

These trucks are fine everyhere else in the world.. They are not banned. However, the checks are more rigorous

Authorities please ban such containers or introduce containers which should not create reasons for danger accidents and loss of lives.

Please restrict these huge trucks containers only during late night when the roads are empty they just drive so bad and end up becoming reason for such incidents.

May the departed soul rest in peace

The driver is responsible for checking that the load is safe and the vehicle is roadworthy.

Tragic to say the least. I cringe with fear every time I see one of these monsters! Is it really the drivers fault? In part yes, but where is the accountability of his company? And the accountability of those who loaded the original container? And the accountability to ensure his vehicle was even road worthy? How many a vehicle do we see that are extremely un-roadworthy. Until the authorities do not clamp down hard, these problems will continue.

Again, criminal negligence. And no law that handles it properly.

It's in our own hands. Drivers "ourselves" should learn from this incident and to giveway/keep a proper distance against such big vehicles especially with load and coming to the curves. In this way, we can prevent it from happening again.

poor old man... may he rest in peace.

All road turns have no enough radius to suit long trailers, this kind of accidents are repeating, kindly the concerned authority must take stringent actions on trailers entry to the city area to save further casualties.

"container that fell off a trailer when it lost its balance while negotiating a turn .."..

This is negligence on the part of the driver who must be prosecuted.

Ma the deceased rest in peace.
