Municipality removes 42,240 abandoned vehicles from public areas
The Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning (MMUP) removed 42,240 abandoned vehicles from March 2013 until April this year.
The vehicles were removed from the Industrial Area and various residential neighbourhoods, according to a report on Gulf Times.
Around 16,000 vehicles that remained unclaimed were sold in public auctions for a total sum of QR7,715,957.
On the other hand, the fees collected for vehicles claimed by their owners amounted to QR1,161,240.
The committee first identifies abandoned cars, makes a list and then pastes stickers on the vehicles asking their owners to take them away within three days.
If a car is not taken away by its owner in three days, the committee removes it. The owner can claim the car back within three months after paying a fine.
The fine is QR500 for small cars, QR800 for trucks and heavy vehicles and QR2,000 for machines and equipment.
A car unclaimed after three months becomes state property and is auctioned off.
