A senior official from the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning stated that the Ministry has come up with plans to build 59 new public parks in various municipalities of the country.

Estimated to cost around QR1.5bn, work on this brand new project will begin next year.

Mohamed Al Khouri, Director, Public Parks Department said that Al Rayyan Municipality will have 25 parks, Um Salal municipality (14) and six each for the municipalities of Al Wakrah, Al Khor and Al Zakhera.

He also said Doha Municipality will have five new parks, Al Daayeen two and Al Shamal one.

Al Khouri told Al Sharq, a local Arabic daily, that the new parks have unique designs, including the shape of a shell, butterfly, a leaf, and shapes of flowers.

Geographical distribution of the parks takes into account the ratio of the municipalities and population of the area to meet world standards of the area per capita which is 20 to 25sqm.

The department has introduced over 200 types of plants and trees since 2010, which were selected to match with local climate and environment and they consume lesser quantity of water.

Meanwhile, the department plans to distribute 1,000 saplings during National Day celebrations and the municipalities will distribute 420,000 seasonal flowers. About 500,000 will be used to make the shape and colour of the national flag.  [The Peninsula]
