IMPORTING CARS FROM HOUSTON TO QATAR
By Ros Brinkhorst •
Hello, We are a Dutch/British couple currenty living and working in Houston Texas, USA for an Oil company. We are on transfer to Qatar by July 2016. We have lived 16 years over 2 postings in the ME in Muscat, Oman and loved it. Looking forward to moving back to the ME. Does anyone have any experience of IMPORTING CARS from Houston into Doha? We have a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee and a VW Golf TSI. Any advice and names of shipping companies would be much appreciated. Very many thanks in advance. Rosalind.

Suggest you meet your requirement from the local market as almost all brands are available here rather than go through the hassle of shipping and clearance. You may then sell your vehicle off whenever you plan to return.
Most modern cars will "survive" in the hot climate here. There may be changes needed to the radiator , but these are not costly.
I believe the rule is that the car must be less than five years old. You will have to pay an import duty which is about 5% of the value of the car.
It is best to check with a local shipping agent - they can advise you as to the paperwork and total costs...
Good luck!
A good first step would be to enquire with the dealers there as to the cars being suitable for the gulf climate... American spec cars are sometimes different from middle east specs and you may find that the cooling requirements for the engines are much higher here... Best of luck..
