The Hamad International Airport (HIA) continued its march to becoming a major hub for public art with the installation of two new sculptures by renowned Iraqi artist Dia Al Azzawi.

The two iconic sculptures, titled ‘Flying Man,’ was jointly installed by Qatar Museums (QM) and the HIA.

The sculptures are modeled after Abbas ibn Firnas, a Muslim historical figure who was an early pioneer who experimented with flight. Through the sculptures, Al Azzawi was aiming to create a monument to celebrate travelling in the modern age.

The pillars that appeared in Mesopotamia inspired the two tall cylinder structures, atop which the sculptures stand.

Flying Man joins the numerous unique sculptures and paintings, done by local and international artists, peppered around the airport.

The Iraqi artist is also holding a major retrospective exhibition at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art and QM Gallery Al Riwaq in Doha, until 16th April 2017.

QM worked with local, regional and international artists for over six years to commission and acquire artworks for key locations in and around the HIA.

The art comprises a mix of site-specific creations as well as pieces which have been carefully selected for the airport.

I like it - yet I wonder how many travellers pay attention to art when going through an airport
