British man killed in Khalifa Stadium construction accident
A 40-year-old British national was killed yesterday, while working on the construction site for the Khalifa International Stadium, which is currently being refurbished.
The man, who was working on the arches of the stadium, reportedly fell over 60M to his death. The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, who are in charge of organising the 2022 FIFA World Cup, confirmed the death in a short statement.
“Earlier today, a 40-year-old British male lost his life working on Khalifa International Stadium. The relevant authorities have been notified and the next of kin has been informed. An immediate investigation into the cause of this fatality is underway and further details will be released in due course.
“The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy shares our deepest condolences with the family for their loss,” read the statement.
The Khalifa Stadium, which will be the main venue for the 2019 IAAF World Championships as well as several matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, has hosted several major events in the past.
The opening and closing ceremonies of the 2006 Doha Asian Games as well as opening and final games of the 2011 AFC Asian Cup were held here.
Accidents don't happen, they are caused. RIP
Normally, there are safety harnesses in place to avoid such accidents where people are working at heights...wonder what happened.
I wonder will there be any news if the worker was Nepali, Bengali, Indian or any other Asian?
