Qatar to play ‘do-or-die’ match against Bahrain in search of Gulf Cup semifinal spot
Qatar will meet Bahrain in a ‘do-or-die’ clash in the Gulf Cup in Kuwait in search of a semifinal spot in the prestigious tournament.
Qatar’s national coach Felix Sanchez wants the defending champions to go for an all-out assault in their last Group B clash today, reported Qatar Tribune.
While a win in the crucial tie will take Qatar to the semifinals, Bahrain need only a draw to proceed to that stage.
In their first two games, three-time Gulf Cup champions Qatar beat Yemen 4-0 but lost to Iraq 1-2 after a feisty battle.
Bahrain, coached by Miroslav Soukup, drew with Iraq 1-1 in their opening game but edged Yemen 1-0 in their second clash to hold a one point advantage over Qatar.
Qatar are currently third in the group (three points) behind Iraq and Bahrain, who have four points each.
Sanchez urged his boys to work hard for the win.
“I’m 100% sure we’ll play an aggressive game and get the result we’re looking for. We’ve to go for the win,” the Spaniard was quoted as saying by Qatar Tribune.
“The team is motivated. We’re motivated to play well and to get the result we need,” he stressed, saying the team was in a positive frame of mind.
He said Qatar's loss against Iraq had many positives for his young side.
“The team showed great personality in the match against Iraq. They tried to perform to the best of their ability. We couldn’t win in the second game but I know they tried hard. They gave their best on the pitch. The team is fit and hopefully we’ll do better against Bahrain,” said Sanchez.
