Qatar has been chosen as hosts of the 2020 Arab Table Tennis Championships
Qatar was awarded hosting rights for the 2020 Arab Table Tennis Championships for Teams yesterday.
The 28th edition of the tournament is expected to be held in the country in March, 2020, reported Gulf Times.
The decision, which was taken in Egypt, is significant because Qatar has been undergoing an illegal blockade by four neighbouring countries — Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
The unanimous decision to award Qatar the tournament was taken during the General Assembly of the Arab Table Tennis Federation in Cairo, Egypt, yesterday.
A total of 16 countries are expected to take part in the 2020 event.
Meanwhile, Qatari paddlers began their participation in the singles and doubles events of the 2018 Arab Championships on a strong note.
Qatar’s Ahmed Khalil thrashed his Iraqi opponent Ahmed Abdulhosein 3-0 in singles in group B. The Qatari duo of Yousef Ali Hossein and Abdulaziz Al Hagagi recorded an easy 3-0 win over Sudan’s Al Tayab Mustafa and Hatim Taha to enter the semifinals, reported The Peninsula.
The prestigious tournament has 386 players from 12 Arab nations — Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Yemen, Palestine, Sudan, Iraq, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Lebanon and hosts Egypt — taking part.
