Iran’s Sohrab Moradi broke weightlifting’s longest standing world record en route to gold in the competition. The hosts’ Sumpradit Sarat won his country’s fifth weightlifting bronze of these Games.
Fares became the third Qatari lifter, after Said Saif Assad (gold in 2002, Busan) and Jaber Saeed Salem (silver in 2006, Doha), to win a medal for the country at the quadrennial continental event.
He was a favourite among spectators and was seen posing for photographs with several of them after the medal ceremony.
“This is great. I love all my fans. I’m having a great time. I expected I could win a medal but didn't think it would be silver,” he said with a beaming face.
Earlier, Moradi hoisted 189kg in the competition’s opening discipline to better the snatch world record set at 188kg in 1999 by Greece’s Akakios Kakiasvilis.
Moradi now has a complete set of 94kg world records that will remain on the books forever. This is because after the Asian Games, all the sport’s weight classes will change and the 94kg class will be upgraded to 96kg.
