While driving, if you feel the need — the need for speed — then be prepared to fulfil the needs of Qatar’s police officers as well, in the form of hefty speeding fines.

In addition to installing speed cameras in and around the country, Qatar’s traffic department has started placing new radars on their vehicles — belonging to both police and civilians, reported Qatar Tribune.

The move, which is aimed at controlling the menace of over-speeding and rash driving, has already gone live.

“A new mobile radar technology is now being used in most patrols,” Lt Gen Yusuf Al Mulla of the traffic safety department said.

The state-of-the-art radars use infrared technology and does not produce a flashing light unlike earlier versions. The official explained that vehicles will be fitted with a speed detector and that the new radars can be used anywhere and in any weather conditions.

The radar, which will capture the photograph and number plate of the vehicle breaking the speed limit, will then immediately send the information to patrolling officers.
