FIFA boss Infantino gives his stamp of approval to Qatar’s preparations for 2022 WC
Qatar, which is preparing hard to host the quadrennial FIFA World Cup in 2022, got a glowing review from the head of the global footballing body yesterday.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who was in Qatar yesterday and visited the different World Cup stadiums under construction, said the 2018 World Cup in Russia may have been the best ever, but the 2022 event in Qatar would be even better, according to Gulf Times.
Earlier, the FIFA boss met with HH The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the two discussed important issues pertaining to the Middle East’s first World Cup in four years time.
HH The Amir, who met Infantino at the Amiri Diwan, spoke to him about enhancing co-operation between Qatar and FIFA even further.
Infantino said the World Cup was an important event not only for Qatar but for the entire region.
“I think this World Cup is extremely important, not only for Qatar but (also) for the whole region. This is a unique opportunity — a chance to show the world what this region can offer. It’s a great opportunity for anybody in the world to come and visit a beautiful place, learn about a new culture and meet new people,” said Infantino.
“The Russian World Cup has been the best ever, but the World Cup in 2022 in Qatar — I’m sure — will be even better,” he added.”
Infantino was all praise for Qatar’s advanced progress of stadium infrastructure. He arrived in Al Wakrah as one of the first passengers on the new Doha Metro. He made the trip from the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre station in West Bay to Al Wakrah in roughly 20 minutes.
After visiting the under-construction Al Wakrah Stadium, he also took a helicopter tour of the seven remaining venues, reported The Peninsula.
“This (Al Wakrah) is an impressive stadium, one which speaks to the football fan. When you enter, you feel how imposing it’s. The progress made here to kick off the World Cup is great. It’s fantastic. Every time I visit, there’s something new here. It;’s really promising,” Infantino was quoted as saying by Qatar Tribune.
Conceived by some of the world’s leading architects, the eight stadiums being built up in different parts of Qatar are ambitious as well as visually exciting.
