India’s cricket World Cup winning stars of 1983 and 2011 invited to Qatar 2022
India is a nation that is proud of its cricketing history. It won the ICC World Cup twice — in 1983 and 2011 — and have been a power to reckon with in the global game.
Members of the two winning teams have now been extended a warm welcome to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted for the first time in the Middle East by Qatar, reported Gulf Times.
Nasser Al Khater, CEO of the newly established FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 LLC which will be responsible for the planning and delivery of operations and services for the tournament, extended the invitation to the former and current cricket stars.
Al Khater, who admitted cricket was a big sport in India, extended the invitation to the members of two winning squads.
“It’s safe to say that this world cup (Qatar 2022) is for all of us to celebrate. I think I’ve to say, we look forward to welcoming you there (in Qatar),” he said at an awards function in Mumbai, according to Hindustan Times.
“I didn’t realise how big cricket was in India, so I know that there’re some members from the 1983 World Cup winning team, that beat the West Indies, here (at the awards function). There’re also members from the team that won the cricket World Cup in 2011. I extend you a special invitation to come and attend the football world cup in Qatar,” Al Khater was quoted as saying by The New Indian Express.
He also extended a special welcome to Indian footballers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The 1983 team, which won the cricket World Cup, was led by legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev, while the side that emerged victorious in the 2011 edition was captained by the charismatic wicket-keeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
