what is the essence of professional designing?

I just graduated last year, with a degree in fashion designing, and now I am actively applying for a job. Nevertheless, wherever I apply for a job, I get a response saying that I should work as an intern first. However, many of my friends who are working as fashion illustration artists under professional designers, and I am not that good at art. I do not know how to draw, as well as other students. I thought drawing was not a requirement with designing anymore, but this keeps getting in my way of success. Should I go for studying arts for a while?
