I want suggestions regarding good learning centre or teacher for grade7.especially for Maths and English (grammar/reading comprehension in particular). Anyone who has personal experience of a good centre , plz do tell. Thanks in advance
I understand that. While my daughter is fluent in spoken English, its her Grammar I am concerned about. I hope some parents can help me here from their personal experience if they know a good tutor.
Honestfm: Yes, I have experience with such "education" centers. They are run on commercial lines for just money-making purposes and are usually managed by housewives. While they may provide some tutoring for math, their knowledge of English is at best on the 20% level. As for speaking the English language, their pronunciations of English words and their phonetics tell you where they come from.
I am saying this because some years back I tutored a young boy who was in grade 6. His parents had put him in one such "education" center. He failed the same class in his school for two consecutive years. His parents went about searching for a qualified tutor and they got to me through one of their friends. The young man began scoring after I took over and in the first semester exams his score was 88% marks. There was nothing wrong with the student. I found him to be intelligent, hard-working and an obedient boy. After he was on the road to success, he was a real happy young man. I realized that during the two years when he went to one of these "education" centers, he was hardly taught anything. He did not know the tables. He did not know simple multiplication and division. He could not spell simple English words. The young man himself was so unhappy with his center that while he did leave home for going to the center every afternoon, he simply "got lost on the way."
In Doha, it is difficult to find a qualified teacher for your child especially when it comes to teaching the English language. A funny notion many people carry in their minds here is that "native speakers" of the English language know their language well. It is absolutely rubbish. I have worked with several native speakers of English and they had no idea of the rules of English grammar. They simply messed up with their English while putting something on paper.
Just a few days back, there was a post at QL from a person who was advertising that he could teach English and also provide training to people wanting to attempt the IELTS test. His two-line advertisement was full of grammatical mistakes. It really made me wonder how could this person teach English and help people prepare for IELTS. But such is the situation in Doha when it comes to education.
In conclusion, I suggest you try to get hold of a tutor who could teach at home. He will take care of your child on a face-to-face basis and give him the attention he wants. He need not be a westerner. However, such teachers may not be easy to find. If you do succeed in finding one, give him the money he deserves.
