Cabinet approves national climate change plan
During its weekly meeting, the Cabinet approved the national climate change plan with the aim of achieving Qatar National Vision 2030.
Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani chaired the meeting which took place at the Amiri Diwan yesterday.
The strategic plan is being developed as part of Qatar's resolve to combat climate change by diversifying its economy, strengthening its capabilities, and maximizing the use of its natural resources.
It will also entail the implementation of legislation and systems to ensure this. The national climate change plan was developed after consultation with more than 50 state agencies.
The plan established national climate change targets, which are represented in more than 35 measures to mitigate climate change and more than 300 measures to adapt.
It also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Qatar's desire to be one of the region's leaders in carbon reduction.

In this context, there are national projects that take concrete steps to reduce emissions. These projects include establishing the Middle East and North Africa's largest carbon capture project, enhancing the efficiency of hydrocarbon toxicity treatment, initiating the Tarsheed program to reduce electricity and water usage, and constructing an 800-megawatt solar power plant.
Qatar is a key player in helping developing countries cope with the effects of climate change, as evidenced by Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani's announcement during His Highness' speech at the UN Climate Action Summit 2019 that the State of Qatar will contribute $100 million to help small developing island states and least developed countries cope with the effects of climate change.
Furthermore, the cabinet was briefed by HE the Minister of Public Health on the latest developments in efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19 during the offset of the meeting.
The cabinet reaffirmed its commitment to continuing to work with the procedures and precautionary measures in place to battle the pandemic.
A draft collaboration agreement between the government of the State of Qatar and the International Peace Institute was also approved by the Cabinet.
It also authorized a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Qatar's Ministry of Municipality and Environment and the Global Green Growth Institute on collaboration in the field of climate change adaptation and green growth.
The Cabinet deliberated on the following two issues and made the appropriate decisions: The yearly reports on the activities and financial situation of the Qatar Financial Markets Authority. The outcomes of the GCC Ministerial Committee on Food Safety's fifth meeting.
