CCTV cameras can now record motorists using smartphones while driving
The Ministry of Interior's General Directorate of Traffic has announced the activation of a system that uses CCTV cameras positioned at roadside and traffic signals to record violations against motorists who use their smartphone while driving.
The introduction of this new system was hinted by the General Directorate of Traffic around six months ago and is officially in place to catch violators.
According to Colonel Muhammad Radi Al Hajri, Director of the General Directorate of Traffic's Traffic Awareness Department, a violation has already been registered against a woman who was using her cellphone while driving her car with children on board.
He went on to say that mobile phones have been a widespread concern in recent years, with users becoming addicted to them even at home.
The failure to wear a seatbelt and the use of a cell phone while driving are two of the most common traffic infractions.
The activation of this system, which can monitor such a violation, serves as a reminder to all motorists to drive carefully and without distractions.
