Lusail Marina ready to host QNB Asia Triathlon Cup Doha 2021
Some of the world’s top athletes will feature in this week’s QNB Asia Triathlon Cup Doha 2021, organisers Qatar Triathlon Federation (QTF) confirmed on Saturday.
With $20,000 up for grabs in prize money, the two-day event will be held at Lusail Marina where 59 athletes from 21 countries will cover World Triathlon’s Olympic distances in swimming, cycling, and running.
Hosts Qatar will also field five athletes at the November 26-27 event including the experienced Ebrahim Al Romaihi during the event that is part of the Continental Cup Series supported by World Triathlon, the global governing body.
This week’s QNB Asia Triathlon Cup Doha 2021 will mark the return of the international triathlon events to Qatar for the first time since the Asian Games were held in 2006.
The participating athletes will cover 1500 meters swim around the Yacht Club in Lusail Marina. This will be followed by a 40-km cycling phase that will end with athletes completing a flat 10-km run, Andre Filip, the Technical Secretary of QTF, said on Saturday.
The QTF official said on Saturday, around 250 local and regional triathlon enthusiasts will have their own event in which the participants will cover half the distance the international athletes are scheduled to tackle on Friday.
“The event on Saturday has been scheduled after witnessing the growing support triathlon has enjoyed in Qatar in recent years. During past Qatar League events, we’ve seen more and more people attending our competitions and showing interest in taking part,” said Filip. “Even during our local events, our participant list keeps growing,” he said.
“We would encourage people to come and watch the athletes in action this coming Friday and Saturday keeping in mind the MOPH’s safety guidelines that will be enforced during the two-day competition,” he added.
The QNB Asia Triathlon Cup Doha 2021 is supported by event sponsors QNB, partners Qatari Diar, NTT, Rayyan Water, Sports Corner and Rasen Sports.
“I take this opportunity to thank our title sponsors Qatar National Bank for their support. I also thank our partners for backing this high-profile event,” Filip said. “We are also indebted to the Qatar Olympic Committee for their valuable support and backing for all of our events,” he added.
