Do you know the Story behind Qatar’s Famous Al Wahda Arches?
Driving past West Bay on your way to Katara, The Pearl, or Lusail, it is impossible to miss the huge arches interconnected by a net-like structure at the Lusail Interchange. So, what is the story behind this hard-to-miss monument? The gigantic and mesmerizing arches are named Al Wahda Arches and are popularly known as the 5 / 6 arches. It is the tallest and biggest monument in the country.
The name ‘’5 / 6’’ is extremely significant as it refers to the date and month of the blockade against Qatar. The blockade started on the 5th of June 2017 and the monument was later inaugurated in December 2017. The project was commissioned by Ashghal, designed by German architect Erik Behrens for AECOM, engineering by Maffeis Engineering, and constructed by Eversendai at a cost of $74m.
The arches are connected to each other by a cable net with minute spherical objects. The net and spheres symbolize Qatar's pearl diving and fishing heritage.
The arches serve to be culturally significant as a sign of resilience’ they stand tall and proud with a height of 100m and weigh more than 9,300 tonnes of steel. The immersive public artwork has received a 2020 International Design Award and 2018 ENR Global Best Project award.
The 5 / 6 arches are located at the southern end of the Lusail Expressway. Lusail Expressway connects Doha with Lusail City and covers many public hotspots such as the Pearl, Katara, Diplomatic Area, and a big number of residential areas, hotels, malls, and other facilities.
The 5 / 6 arches are now on the site of the old Arch roundabout which was commonly known as Rainbow Round About. It served as a vital intersection for the West Bay traffic.
The 5 / 6 Arch Monument is located in the north-eastern district, Onaiza. Onaiza is located between Al Dafna (West Bay), Qatar's emerging central business district, and Lusail, the futuristic sustainable city, which is set to hold 200,000 residents in the near future. Popular neighboring areas also include Katara Cultural Village, Lagoona Mall, Mondrian Hotel, and The Pearl, Qatar.
