Every year, an estimated 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted in the global food industry and than a third of all the food we produce for consumption goes to waste before it’s even sold or consumed.
The situation is no different in Qatar too as an estimated sixty percent of the urban solid waste in the country is composed of food, according to a case study published by United Nations in 2021. This translates to an average food waste estimated between 0.7 kg and 0.9 kg per person per day for the food service sector.
This issue is aggravated by the strict laws for the sale of food and other perishable items implemented by ministries due to which most vendors often remove products from shelves several months before their date of expiry that eventually end up as waste.
