6 Tips to Care for your Skin this Summer
By Dipti Nair
Summer is almost here and with it comes the challenge of maintaining healthy and radiant skin. Qatar’s scorching heat and intense sunlight can take a toll on your skin. With temperatures crossing 50 degrees, your skin will need some extra care to keep it glowing. Follow our tips to protect your skin during the sweltering months in Doha.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
This summer, make water your best friend. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin nourished from the inside out. Avoid excessive caffeine consumption as they can dehydrate your skin and make it look dull and dry. Try to make positive changes to your diet during these months, avoid processed foods, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and avoid sugar. Your skin will thank you.
Moisturize some more
While water can hydrate the skin and nourish it from within, a moisturizer is essential to hydrate your skin from the outside. Choose a moisturizer that is non-greasy and suited to your skin type. The best time to apply a moisturizer is right after a bath as it will seal in the moisture and prevent your skin from drying out.
Don’t forget to exfoliate
The rising temperatures can often lead to skin becoming more oily as the sebaceous glands under the skin work overtime in response to the heat. The excess oil can clog pores and trigger breakouts and acne. Exfoliation gets rid of dirt, sweat, makeup and keep your pores clean and skin fresh looking. Don’t be too rough when you exfoliate and use mild products to get rid of dead and damaged skin cells.
Sunscreen is non-negotiable
When it comes to summer skin care, sunscreen is not optional, it’s a necessity. Sun exposure can damage your skin and cause premature skin ageing, skin blistering or tanning and even skin cancer. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to shield your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Remember to apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of your skin, including your face, neck, arms, and legs. Don't forget commonly overlooked areas like your ears and the back of your neck. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
Steer clear of heavy makeup
Wearing heavy makeup during summer can clog your pores, leading to breakouts. Also as the skin produces more oil during the hot weather, heavy-duty creams and powders may not last throughout the day. Try wearing light tinted moisturizers instead of heavy foundations that will cake up your skin. Choose oil-free and breathable formulas as this allows your skin to breathe and reduces the chances of makeup smudging due to perspiration.
Protect your eyes and lips
Don’t forget your lips when applying SPF. Apply a lip balm with SPF to keep your lips hydrated and shielded from the sun. Your eyes are also particularly susceptible to sun damage, so don't overlook them in your skin protection routine. Invest in sunglasses with UV protection to safeguard your eyes from harmful UV rays and reduce the risk of eye strain and wrinkles.
With these expert tips, you can enjoy all that summer in Doha has to offer while keeping your skin healthy, hydrated, and protected.
