Shouldnt it be the other way round??? tip 30 to 50 to a waiter who earns less and tip 5 to a waiter who earns alot... sounds fair to me :/...

Oh well I tip at the gas stations, those people really work hard and get less paid with 12 hours of work. They truely deserve the tip.

but I do know for a fact that when they add it on to a bill in the States..it goes to the waiters. Both my sons worked as waiters and when it was a group of more than 6 people, the service charge was added for the extra work needed to handle a party that large. The tip went to the servers and if the patrons thought the waitstaff was excellent, they would tip on TOP of the service charge.

But if the change is less that 5 riyals...I tell the server to keep it. I know its not much, but it's what I could spare.

If anyone cares to email about the problem, go to ifcqatar.com and email the company (address is at the bottom). They own Chili's, Macaroni Grill, and Diet Shoppe (I think). All of these charge the service charges. Be sure to note who the chairman and manager of the company is though.

I myself have emailed them and never received a response though, so take your chances.

We did the same thing Amnesia.

They don't get a big salary anyway and at least we knew that they received it.

Believe it or not, it's an international thing, happens alot in the Middle East though.

It's hard to know when someone gets the money and someone doesn't.

I usually give 5qr on the side for the waiter (depending on my service)

The service charge is a quite known factor, that is why only 2 out of 100 people tip in qatar.

I have to say I didn't know about this but I suspected whenever I see the service charge on a bill that the wait staff does not get it so we have always left a tip for the waiter/waitress.  But after reading this I will slip it to them personnally.  I would hate to think the money we leave on the table does not go to the waiter but the manager.

Seeing that service charge on the bill though, especially if the bill is from an expensive restaurant can be a surprise and a detriment to patrons leaving a tip for the wait staff.

Surfer_Boy...just skip the restaurants that exploit its customer and doesnt care for its employees.

Customer service here means the Customer is used for servicing the need of the Establishment Owner.

If the Customer makes a hue and cry then the Customer may as well "go service himself"...sorry for the pun.

The Restaurants here are real slow. Its always good if you can carry something to read while your food is being served.

i was regreting till now not giving any tips to the supervisor that is serving us the food all nite long. It was at Japanese in Ramada. The bill was huge :( and service charge was something like 1800 riyal.

I told my husband to give some tips for him..but looking at the number at service charge turned him off to give something..

this thing is happening all over the world..at least where i had been too..let's give little something then..just to appreciate their work.

I tend to avoid eating at the more 'expensive places' altogether, but not just for this reason.  Other than the fact that I find the whole business model exploitative of the labour, and the food is generally not much better than the cheap places anyway.

And to be perfectly frank, it is a rare event indeed when I get service in a cafe or restaurant that's worthy of a tip.  Again, the service in the cheaper, family run places is much better than it is in the supposed 'high end' dining places, such as Mint.

At most places the staff are late, inattentive, don't know the menu and typically just lie to you when you ask if something can be done in a specific way.

That being said if the service is worthy of a tip, I will never 'leave' one - you have to actually give it to the waiter otherwise it goes straight in the till.

Has anyone else noticed the policy in place at some places now where the staff aren't allowed to accept tips?   I used to leave a couple of riyals for the server at Costa coffee when I go for my morning Latte and now they aren't allowed to accept it.  Why not?

hahaha, yeah...I kinda hate Qatar for it. It MAY be a luxurious place to live in, but totally a "scam"(firguratively speaking). I moved to the states where you actually have to work to get money, unlike freeloader Qatar...
