Got attacked by 5 men on the way to Losail yesterday

iocn4
By iocn4

My sister in law recently visited doha to meet my parents for the first time. She had just arrived two days ago with my month old niece and I was taking her to the Losail circuit for the MotoGP thing going on. We had private tickets and wanted to go after the race to the paddocks.

Anyway, on the way, I notice a range rover that had been following us for a good 20 minutes all the way from my place to the corniche. They did fall back sometimes but caught back up. Kept staring at my sister in law and showing money to her (classy). Anyway I stop at the last gas station before the road to Khor and notice a cop car there. I go talk to them and tell them about the car thats been following us all the way. The cop takes their number and asks me where im going and offers to drive behind us all the way to the losail circuit.

Anyway I fill up and leave the station and the cop makes a u-turn at the first roundabout. The range rover followed us through. This point I start hitting the gas to get away from them and my sister in law calls the cops on the phone and tell them whats going on. What happens next will live with me for a long time to come. At almost 160-180kph, the range rover comes up on my side and turns in sharply missing me less than an inch. I had to turn my car sharply to avoid them, doing this I hit a big rock on the side of the road and the right side of my car jumped a good three feet in the air and hits the ground hard. I could feel the gas pedal become useless as the car crawled to a stop. I tell my sister in law to stay in the car and lock it and I take my crowbar(I keep one with me after all the horror stories that happen on the highways here) and step out of the car. The range rover stops behind us and five qatari men,18-25 at best, step out of the car. Two of them were too drunk to even walk properly. Anyway I ask them if there is a problem and we can take care of it if they want that. They come closer saying something in arabic and try to grab my right hand, I lose the crowbar in the fight but get one of them in the chin with my right hand. After that they over powered me and messed me up pretty bad.

Now they tried to open the door of my car and when they couldn't they start hitting the car. As I start getting back up and grab my crowbar again they run back to their car and speed off almost running me over.

I get back in the car and my sister in law is in tears. Thankfully the baby in the back of the car was ok. the cops arrive after a leisurely 20 minutes and offer to take us to the hospital after seeing the condition of the car.

This happened yesterday midnight on the way to khor. The police told me that they will be contacting me if they get a hold of those people but till now, nothing. As for my sister in law, she will be leaving on wednesday. My niece was not harmed.

Right now the only thing going through my head is the incompetent waste of sperm that had somehow got into a police uniform that we met at the gas station. And the fact that me and my family was in harms way and not one car stopped to lend a hand. The fact that harm could have come to a month old child and her 19 year old mother because of some drunken losers who act like they have never seen a girl before, and the fact that all this hapenned in what is supposed to be one of the safest countries in the region. Ive read stories here to parking lot horrors and all that but I never thought it could happen to me. or that it was a rare thing here. well according to some friends here, its more common than you think.

If you report to police they will immediately stop the car for the purpose of investigating !!  I am surprised why police did not stop that car when Mr. Icon and Range Rover were stopped at the service station. hmm.. even police was drunk at that time ??

Also I don't believe that when those ppls were beating him and NO ONE on the highway stopped for help !!! Whatever Qataris are but when it comes to help they are the first to stop their cars ....

In my opinion .. this whole story is just to spoil the names of Qataris and create hate between Expts and Qatari !! Thas all ...

If not, Mr. Icon should come back to us !!

Just noticed that iocn4 said his incident happened at 'yesterday midnight' on the way to Khor and that they were on the way to see the races at Losail.

Are there races on after midnight at Losail?

It's awfully late for a month old baby to be out and be taken to a very noisy arena.  I think that is bad for their delicate ears.

Are the gas stations open at midnight on that road?

I'm sorry for questioning such a crime but to me there are some things that just don't gel.

It's realy a sad story, but I wonder for who is sadder for icon or for Qatar.

I fully agree with diamondgirle and I share what Mila said, that Al Thani name involvment above is symbilic.

I agree with Aisha that the main reason that all such bad things are happening is the west influence. So to avoid all this in the future it will be good the alcohol to be banned again, also all western radio and tv chanels and furthermore all this people who can be missconcidereed as Qatari to not be allowed to live and visit the country.

The only thing I cannot understand is how it could happen the police knowing the registration of the car to not be aible to catch these guys.

Although I don't condone brutality and I am with you on this concerning it is not sure which nationality - you will have seen than many don't agree withthe comments, I find it wrong to put an Al Thani tag on things as if they will not have to suffer the consequences if they do something wrong. They will also be caught and reprimanded.

However, you have just as little right to put violent movies etc. on the shoulders of the West as many movies come from Asia Minor and Asia itself. Please be clear what bad taste this leaves if you blame us Westerners all for the misdemeanors of  your young boys GCC countries no matter which nationality.

Education starts in your own country and perhaps before writing to Dr. Phil or Oprah you should think about educating the young boys here yourself (not meaning you) but the country.

They certainly do not learn their driving manners from the West this is a sure thing.

I have been following this forum since it was posted. I really feel sorry for the people this happened too, but as mentioned before we have not received an update. So we really do not know about the credibility....

However I am surprised at some of the comments made. Why do you assume they are Qatari, and why immediately people think they are Al Thani. FYI the name Al Thani does not mean immediate immunity.

However when this kind of things happen here, and do not misunderstand me, I do not condone any brutality in any form whatsoever , immediately the reaction is that Qatar is an underdeveloped country. That alcohol is involved and what ever else some of you came up with.

The fact is that we should blame society in general. Look at what is going on in the world. If you look in the dailies you see all kinds of articles mentioning crime all over. i.e. to mention one: 14year old accused of stabbing his 16 year old friend. everyday there is stuff like this in the papers. However I think what we should blame is the media which publishes these articles and specially tv, films and computer games which give as example this kind of behaviour as frequent and normal. They teach kids that this kind of behaviour is run of the mill. Consequences are not the issues.

When kids get these kind of examples thrown at them, it is logic that they start acting out in real life. They challenge each other. Dare each other.

To avoid these kind of situations all over the world I think we should start monitoring the kind of violent movies, games, tv shows and articles in the paper.

Let our kids realize that this kind of behaviour is unacceptable in any kind of form. We should start at the bottom or source of the problem.

And FYI most of these "examples" are born from the western society.....and since Qatar is opening up no wonder it is now getting here too.

Maybe all this should be the subject of a new forum. Am looking forward to see your reactions and I can go on about this ubject. I even wrote to Dr Phil & Oprah about it a couple of years ago.....

I'm kind of skeptical about this incident. If they were consuming alcohol, Why they kept chasing them without losing control of the car at high speeds,  such a long distance?   Are you sure they Are Qatari and not other Arab nationalities? Example: I got stuck in Sea-lane beach a couple of months ago in the wet sand, this Gents came out and assisted me in lowering the tire pressures with a gage, Then he guide me in which position I should turn my tires. After I was out of the muddy sand, he stop over with his car and asked , How I was doing? After a brief conversation, he told me that he started a vehicle recovery business and gave me his business card. I did ask him If he was a national local, he told me Yes!   Of all Qataris I have met, he is one of my best friends in Qatar. For me being a foreigner in a strange land I'm still pleased with his honesty and candor. Not saying there is only Angels in Qatar there is devils too.So far the only Hell Angels I had to deal with is,  the Rage drivers and inexperience ones.   None is perfect, But my luck has being nice.  In a situation like that, I'll take my chances with my driving skills instead of risking getting run over If I decided to stop and Confronting them all alone.Always have your golf club on hand, is a nasty skull buster or leg breaker. Too bad I'm not allowed to carry my 38 Inch Machete, that I'm very skill full with.    Everyone, once in their lives have their own moments of replicationand mutation. You should not feel ashamed as everything is unclear about this situation and there are other Arab nations here wearing Thobs and Gutras.

To use the name of any family, let alone the Al Thani family is plain deformation of character and one should be wise enough to know this kind of thing.

If it did happen the justice system will catch up with them and they will have to face the concequences.

If everyone would think like you, that they are representing their country while residing in another country the world would be a better place for all of us.

The procedure does not need more than a couple of hours to get the suspects. Similar incidents happened when there were no computers and

no mobile phones. Yet the suspects were called to the station in no time.

What I mean to say. icon4 posted this testerday (day before technically) and since then we did not hear from him any update. FOr this reason am saying that something is fishy.

If this had been a group of Westerners the same thing will happen, the case will run the same way.

If they have done something this wrong and they were drunk they will be ashamed in front of their families and other friends the will have lost all respect from their surrounding and perhaps their jobs as this is in their cuture to respect others asthey want to be respected.

I am quite sure if they had not been  under the influence of alcohol this would never have happened, what happened to the offer of the police escort this seems to have disappeared here.

It doesn't work like that, they will take the care numbers and they will search who the cars belong to, then the case will go through official channels where the complaint is registered and there is a file made. The persons involved inthe the complaint will be summoned to the police station where they will be asked to give a statement and depending on the gravity of the situation they may or may not go to jail, will however be taken to the public prosecuter. After that information will be released and/or the injured party will be invited to the prosecutor to give his statment to the public prosecutor and he may be asked to identify the the boys. There will be a file number created and under that number you can ask about your case. Ask me I got lifted recently lol.

They do have a system but nothing will happen until the parties have been tothe police station.

i hope you'll keep us updated on what happens with your case.

while it certainly is unfair to label all qataris based on incidents like this, i feel that a significant portion of the young population here have a real sense of entitlement and think they can do whatever they want.  i guess it's to be expected when they get so much without having to work hard for it.

i have met a couple of really nice Qataris, and without exception they were older gentlemen who had to work for what they had.  all had also lived abroad in their younger days too, so maybe that helped them realize how lucky they are.

i have had a few SUVs try to run me off the road road at speed too, once because i wouldn't launch into a roundabout when i deemed that the approaching vehicles were too close and then with the same guy behind me after the roundabout getting more angry because i would not let him pass (on a one lane street).  when the road opened up to 2 lanes, he got next to me and tried to run me off the road.  it's just savage.

i think the money here temporarily gives a false impression, but the fact remains that Qatar is still not a developed country (according to the UN, and other international bodies).  one reason for that is the economy's over-reliance on one sector (which they are working on).  another is education (which they are working on).  certainly instances like this don't help matters (which I hope they will work on).

This is an extremely sad incident, however, if the police have taken the car numbers there will be a complaint file iniated and they will catch them it probably won't even take a week. Unfortunately, this will not help resolve the issues with the car and moreover the unpleasantness your sister-in-law and baby suffered.

Also I do find it is an issue about alcohol - they were driving under the influence of alcohol which endangered all traffic on the road accordingly.

i think that's the primary reason it continues to perpetuate. Heard of such stories too, and as long as arab media and its personnel (journalists and the like) are continue tied down with containment and cover-up then i don't think these gulf countries will ever embrace the idea nor will they exemplify the truism for democracy.

Free media means free people.

This horrendous things should be highlighted (in the most constructive way) and dealt with most aggresively. Although i do think that some are of the better lot; still the rotten ones are more. Undoubtedly, for us expatriates, we'll never have the airheadedness these youngsters have (w/ respect to patriotism of our own country) since they've been brought up with such a regal lifestyle and reared with superior ity complex. I think this is more about "small mob" mentality than booze but it's true that when you get a bunch of such young men together there is an element of bravery that maybe one of them alone wouldn't even dare attempt.  A very sad and frightening commentary at the very least.  I hope the young lady recovers from the shock and I think you, iocn4, were very brave to protect your loved ones.  Regardless of nationality, this should be punished and I hope the police are tracking them down right this minute.

It is very shocking experinece. I do agree with what Icon had done.

I would do more than that to fight for my family.

When my family safety is concerned. I wouldnt hesitate to do any thing.

I would smash his car with my car. Not necessary while driving. but i would simply go backward and hit his car. So i mark it as his fault. ;)

These young crazy arougant spolied boys are becoming every where. They have money and think they can get anything with their money.

The problems that once they get any job, they can go to any bank and get as much loans as they want.

In addition to the stock market which provided lots of money to many of them.

Rami, I disagree with you. This isn't a story about alcohol but a story about people not taking responsibility for their actions. I've seen completely sober Qataris leer and taunt women and treat them as sexual objects. All alcohol does it remove the inhibitions; the latent sexism is still there. Rapes still happen even with sober men (as other postings in the forums have documented).

What is missing is the sense (in this country) that women are people too and have every right to be valued and treated as people in their own right. What is also missing is the sense (in this country) that people of any nationality, race or creed have an equal right to live their lives without abuse and objectification.

Those aren't problems that were created by access to alcohol and they aren't going to be cured by removing alcohol.

And iocn, I completely feel for you and the fear and panic that you and your family must have felt throughout the ordeal. May God bless your sister-in-law and your family and give you peace and healing.

Alcohol has been available in Qatar for many many years. The people that were allowed to purchase it knew how to handle it and didn't go crazy.

Qataris using the Falcon Club bar when it was open similarly didn't go crazy and get drunk.

Problems with guests became apparent because the guest didn't know when he would be able to get another drink and went OTT.

Then the laws were relaxed so that virtually anybody can purchase it, including those that abuse the priviledge.

well as much as i'd like to call it bravery i still feel WHAT IF something worse had to happen, it was bad enough they met with an accident but to go and confront 5 drunk men isnt always that wise. He could have been seriously hurt or worse.

I'll GUARANTEE that this sort of behaviour is not tolerated in Qatar. Add the fact that they were drunk and you've got a tight case.

I'm disgusted at how these drunk Qataris acted.

I'm ashamed to even share the same passport as those people.

I'm also so sad that your sister experienced this. I do hope from my heart that you'll tell her that this isn't the norm and there are alot of good people out here.

If there is something I can do, let me know. These guys shouldn't escape.

If you want to meet me tomorrow, I'll go with you to the police station and translate for you.

I'll be busy until around noon, but I can hopefully do something after then?

Send me a pm with your mobile number (if you do need me) and I'll pick you up and we'll go together.
