Vet Fees
I am starting to be disheartened by the vets in Qatar. Everytime you go to the clinic, the vet fees have gone up again. At QAWS, we don't ask for an adoption fee, we ask for the animal's vet bill to be paid by the new owner. When we rehome an animal - we get NOTHING.
We're finding it harder and harder to find people to adopt animals simply because of the cost involved.
Recently we had an average sized male dog castrated, and with the surgery, post-op medication and vaccinations, his adoption fee is now QR1,560.
Today, one of our 4 month old puppies, Maisie, was out playing with all the other puppies, they all got a bit over-excited and now she has a broken leg. Unfortunately due to the nature of the break, it requires a pin to fix it. We were quoted over QR4,000 to have this fairly routine surgery done.
We get a 10% discount but we're still spending QR15,000 - QR20,000 a month in vet costs.
Our decision is do we pay QR4,000 for the surgery or QR300 for her to be euthanised?
Why does cost have to be the deciding factor?
I've no doubt that the surgery cost will end up being split between the committee members as she is such a beautiful, friendly and healthy little girl but we don't have huge salaries from our day-jobs and we can't keep personally funding these surgeries.
I'm not complaining about the vet's themselves. They're all very good at what they do. I'm complaining about the prices.
OK - rant over.
I totally agree. The only reasonable explaination is that My people the Qatari people pay whatever the vet asks of them which made most greedier for money. If people tried to look for better prices and refused to pay ridiculous costs for just tests then vets will have to compete and we would get reasonable prices. I took my kitten to the Canadian veterinary for the 1st time just because i was being extra careful and after checking temperature which was 38.5 the doc suggested a full check+hospitalization which would’ve cost 2000+QR.
