Indian Ambassador Deepa Gopalan Wadhwa yesterday acknowledged the support extended to the mission by community forums and those bodies constituted under the aegis of the country’s Indian embassy.
Wadhwa recalled the forums’ role in community welfare at the annual day of the Indian Community Benevolent Fund (ICBF) at the Al Ghazal auditorium yesterday evening.
Lauding the ICBF for the role that it has played over the last 25 years by extending a helping hand to needy and deserving members of the Indian community, ambassador said its activities had considerably reduced the pressure on the embassy on many occasions.
She also singled out some occasions in the last three months since her arrival in Qatar when the ICBF has come to the rescue of community members.
The ambassador also highlighted the importance of community organisations in view of the significant rise in the Indian expat population since 2005. “Our countrymen in Qatar have more than doubled in the last four years and it is imperative on the part of the organisations to come to the assistance of the needy at all possible opportunities.”
Speaking earlier, ICBF president Dr Mohan Thomas hailed the support extended to the forum since Wadhwa took over as envoy.
“Deepa Wadhwa has been very liberal in supporting the IBCF in many ways and finance is coming directly from the embassy,” said Dr Thomas. The president also mentioned that the forum provided almost QR 750,000 over the last year.
Wadhwa gave away ICBF awards to some forums, institutions and individuals.
Former president of the ICBF Nilangshu Dey was given the Kanjani Memorial ICBF Award for his “unparallelled contributions” to his Indian compatriots.
Under Dey’s stewardship, the ICBF set up help desks in Dukhan, Doha and Al Khor.
The ICBF Humanitarian Services awards were given to CCIC Malayali Samajam geeral secretary C S Narayana Kurup, Joseph Francis Gonsalves, Usha Chouksey, and M V Premanavas of Al Khor.
The organisers recalled Kurup’s efforts to bring medical relief to a large number of low-income groups in Al Khor. His help in repatriating remains over the last 15 years were also recalled.
Gonsalves contribution in attending to remains at the Hamad Hospital mortuary was also praised.
Managing director of Seashore Group of companies Mohamed Ali, entrepreneurs Ranjan Joshi and Shamsudheen Olakara of Quality Group, house wife and social worker Mani Rathi were among those honoured with ICBF Appreciation Awards.
Qatarliving.com, Kerala Social and Cultural Association, Palakkadan Nattarangu, Ghanem Holdings, and Qatar Airways too were honoured for their services.
