DUBAI: A 67-year-old Indian visitor was stopped from entering the Dubai Metro, apparently for wearing a traditional Indian dress - dhoti.
According to the victim's daughter Madhumati, a policeman stopped them near the punching gates of the Etisalat Metro Station on last Saturday and told her father that this dress was not allowed and he could not go on the metro wearing it.
"I pleaded with him to let us go... But the policeman wouldn't hear a word. It was really embarrassing and my father was really upset," she was quoted as saying by the Gulf News.
Madhumati said that she tried her best to explain to the policeman that the dhoti was an Indian traditional dress, which covers the body fully but to no avail.
She said her father, who is on a visit to Dubai, had travelled on the Metro wearing the same dress on various occasions but had never been stopped.
"What has happened is really surprising. There is no official restriction from the RTA and we have not given instructions on dress codes," said Ramadan Abdullah, director of operations at the RTA's rail agency.
"I think anything that covers the body and is respectable should be allowed. I believe it was a personal reaction on the part of the policeman and this matter will be investigated."
Not a problem with the dhoti...the problem is when there is strong wind and when it rains
Dhoti is so much similar to the thobe...
The thobe is as funny and strange to people outside GCC... just as the Dhoti is outside India...
But then there are many narrow minded people out there...
... reminds me of two baldies calling each other bald...
I remember when i was at Dubai and i just managed to enter a Metro to reach Mall of Emirates...my dhoti got caught stuck in the door while boarding a metro and i was left with my neon color undies...:(
All the passenger were giving me weired looks and some even gave blank stares...:(
Police will decide your dress or your culture & traditions ?
The Pant type Dhoti is the North Indian Dhoti the skirt type is the South Indian Dhoti...
Whats so paranoia about a piece of dress?.. a dress that covers everything...
Crazy...
Well what makes the old guy not to wear a trouser ?
He can travel out of his country, but defies to have an international dress code, then he is wrong morally.
If he does not want to change life style, let him stay home
Its strange, Dhotis are respectable wear and dont know the reason why the policemen stopped him from travelling.
I have noticed ladies wearing improper wears in and out of the metro and were not stopped....
No s$$$$ really mast kalandar!?!?!?
Regardless, you can't insist your traditions out of your country. Just simply follow the rules.
Miss MM I think the incident has occur to 67 year old father who was on a visit visa not woman
So an 67 year old woman should be allowed to wander around in a mini skirt and tank top?
ones age rules need to be relaxed in a few / particular cases....
Ok, I'm not a 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure it's illegal for men to wear the lungi type one here. You'll see it occasionally in rural areas, but you don't generally see it in the cities.
The lower ...
the one which looks like a skirt...
Ok, I google "Dhoti" and I get two pictures back, one appears to be pants and the other appears to be more of a skirt. Which is correct?
looks like this is called Lungi or Dhoti ...
