How can i fix my 4WD on a 02 ford ranger?

Ever since I got the truck a few months back, I have yet to figure out the issue why my 4WD isn't engaging.
It is an auto transmission and the 4WD is engaged by a switch on the middle console above the radio.
I have tested it by giving it some gas on dirt roads and my back tires just spin.
Also, I'm sure there is supposed to by a lamp indicator that comes on when it is enganged, but doesn't.
Any possible issues that I could check and possibly fix?

generally u need to put the gear on N then switch the 4wd coz it won't engage unless the car is on neutral position. if it didn't then there might be a problem in the 4wd
