I am starting this thread to start a discussion about health matters such as weight loss and healthy food choices. I would encourage all of you to share your experiences, expertise and issues with us. We would have a healthy discussion and would try to learn from each other. I would like to start with my health tips:
• NEVER use the so-called weight loss products , especially the herbal tea. This tea is anything but herbal and a friend of mine almost died after using it for a couple of days.
• Avoid pops (Pepsi, coke, dew etc) instead use juices made out of fresh fruits but the best drink of all is our one and only ‘WATER’. If you drink around 8 glasses of water it will not only rejuvenate your skin, it will also detox your body and help you lose weight.
• Eat fresh fruits and salad to get anti oxidants , all kinds of vitamins. Your body will get a lot of fiber and most importantly your skin will get a healthy glow.
• Instead of relying too much on animal protein start using vegetable protein such as PROTEIN IN LEGUMES: Garbanzo beans, Kidney beans, Lentils, Lima beans, Navy beans, Soybeans, Split peas.PROTEIN IN GRAINS: Barley, Brown rice, Oatmeal, , Rye, Wheat germ, Wheat.VEGETABLE PROTEIN: Beets, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Green peas, Green pepper, Lettuce, Mushrooms, Mustard green, Onions, Potatoes, Spinach, Tomatoes, Turnip.PROTEIN IN FRUITS: Apple, Banana, Cantaloupe, Grape, Grapefruit, Orange, Papaya, Peach, Pear, Pineapple, Strawberry, Tangerine, Watermelon.PROTEIN IN NUTS AND SEEDS: Almonds, Cashews, Peanuts, Pumpkin seeds, Sesame seeds, Sunflower seeds, Walnuts (black). Nowadays, chicken, eggs and other animals are all being genetically engineered. They are being fed/injected growth hormones in order to increase the production , resulting in different diseases among the consumers, the humans. I am weaning my family away from meat protein and trying to hook them on vegetable protein.
• Takes small portions of meals several times during the day to keep your metabolism going instead of starving yourself for hours and then eating a hefty meal.
• If you prefer only desi food, take a small serving of your favorite meal supplemented by a large serving of salad.
• Avoid ready made juices as they have a lot of added sugar in them ,instead eat fresh fruit to get the benefit of both juice and the fiber.
• If you are rice lover, make sure to boil the rice for a few minutes then drain the water , add some oil/butter before keeping it for dum. This rice will have less carb/starch and will be less fatty.
• Avoid white flour for making chapatees , instead, use whole wheat flour. White flour isfull of carb.
• Yoga / pilates is the best way to lose weight, get more flexibility and have a great posture. You can find video lessons on utube, I guess. Yoga really, really works.
• Treadmill is my most favourite exercise equipment. It really helps you increase your metabolism and burn fat but make sure to supplement it with leg and knee excercises to avoid stiff knees afterwards.
That’s all for now but I will keep adding more points as we move along.
