I suppose someone has to put in the overquoted remark from the late American Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart (no relation to Jon): "I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced within that shorthand description [of pornography]. But I know it when I see it."

Just a little law geek humor there. Seriously, that's one of the most quoted quips from an actual court case in US legal history.

While I won't attempt to define it, I will add that the folks who monitor the websites in this place in which we live seem to include in their definition of pornography an intellectual discussion of the arguments against and for same-sex marriage in the United States. I found this out when I tried to print said discussion out as a way of helping to frame a challegning discussion for my students on a topic very common in some countries but not so common here. In this case, there definitely wouldn't have been anything for Justice Stewart (or fans of Debbie Does Dallas) to see.
