We lived in Melbourne for 16 months and loved it!!! We were in Saudi before that and now hubby is in Doha. Our children were younger and they loved it as well. In my opinion it is wonderful for families or singles. Tons of things to do and see and a great night life. There was never a dull moment.
As for traveling, there is so much to do just inside of Australia. While, Doha is great (wish I was there right now) it will just depend on the lifestyle you want. If you have children I would highly recommend any of the private schools there. The only hard part was finding a place to rent. We needed a house. There were some great apartments, but that just wasn't for us. Now, this may have changed since we were there in the late 90's.
You will just have to figure out what would be best for you. The cost of living may be slightly higher in Australia then Doha as well. Not sure about that (it was higher for us being from the states). Personally, I would head back Downunder in a heartbeat if the opportunity came up. The only bad thing for me was the winters. Being from a Southern state in the US it was pretty cold. That was the only negative thing for me. Best of luck.

P.S. The public transportation system was pretty good too.
