Well I think that part of what happened is that Charan was joking around but, as often happens with text, much of the meaning was lost so instead of coming off as funny, it was offensive to some.  I'm sure everyone has done it on occasion.  Without seeing facial expressions and hearing tone of voice -  something meant to be just silly comes off as rude.
