There is a huge amount of poverty in my country (the US) but overall, life expectancy, literacy rates and standard of living are high. India is nowhere near the US or Europe in these areas. Child mortality is high, illiteracy is high and there are many who face serious hunger issues. I know, I have been to Mumbai.

This is not a criticism, it is a fact. I know that India has made great strides in recent years and that things are markedly improving but there s still a long way to go.

An interesting example is Ireland. For centuries, people left Ireland in droves (including my own ancestors). Ireland was poor and backward. Now Ireland is rich and there is net immigration into Ireland, a strong economy and high quality of life. When that happens in India, then you will know that India has really arrived.
