I hope to teach my children not only how to survive but also to overcome such calamity! Far to often we hear such valuable pieces of advice given to us about patience however we rarely hear how wrong such abusive acts are towards women and children. And usually we are told to be pray, it must be because of some sin we have done, patience, and humbling ourselves. In my eyes being patient is also battling against the abuse and stopping it from happening. As long as we are well rounded muslims who can analyse and overcome our situations in light of Quran and sunnah then we really cannot go wrong!
And I fully agree that it is a calamity not to show our children that we are grateful for what we have been given. Our wisdom should be that it is said without negating or lessening the problems we are confronting. And as you said is used to help strengthen our own eeman.
