As for the prophet then what he said commanded us to do and practiced is not up for us to debate unless we enter the fold of disbelief. I.E. that he was not a prophet and did not leave us upon a clear religion in which we follow his example. Should he have made any mistakes it is quite clear that according to muslim theology God corrected him at those times!
Now if you would like to talk about the authenticity of certain hadith that would be another issue entirely!
