TCM ur post is very very pertinent... and what Shreeya says is the most idealistic and should be situation ... however we all know majority of the people do in fact mention the state from where they belong rather than from India.. and this they say not only to Indians (if they guess the person right) but to anyone.... obviously the person if not from India asks where is that and then comes "its in India'. Feels so shameful at times...

I for sure always say I am from India and then later if someone wants... the place in India.

I have at times even lost my cool with such useless people and retorted very strongly... but then some (or rather many) of these are just incorrigible... they tend to carry the mindset wherever we go..
