Why is that honor killing always about killing a female member of the family?

Would they kill a boy if he eloped with a girl of another caste?

I don't understand the culture of some people who valued their mother like a goddess but wouldn't bat an eye to cut off the head of their sister/daughter/niece if she disrespect the family wishes and then called it honor killing.
