My understanding is that a family visit visa can be valid for up to SIX months. You have to keep renewing it, but after six months the person needs to exit the country to start the process again. It costs 200 QAR for each month that you extend the visa by, i.e. if you extend it by 2 months it'll cost you 400 QAR.
Go to the immigration department (near Landmark shopping centre), get an application form typed up in arabic (cost 5 QAR), present this form with the person's passport, and voila!
Any person holder of an American or one of the 33 countries listed by the list of the Qatar Foreign Affairs ministry, can get inside Qatar by paying a fee100QR. (paid by a credit card or by a QNB card only - no cash accepted, at the airport arrivals desk, this visa is for 30 days, after that s/he has to to go the Passport and Immigratino office at the airport (located near the first parking lot infront of the big garden), that it is open 24 hours and all year long, renew the tourist visa for another 30 days by paying another 100QR. the same way as above, and then after that period s/he needs to leave the country, can get another visa the same way by proving when s/he enters to Qatar again that he camoe from another country. You can do this as much as you like until getting tired.
If you are American you can enter the country and obtain a 1 month tourist visa at the airport. This can be renewed for an additional month at the airport immigration office. After that you can leave the country and re-enter immediately, and the whole thing starts over. So 2 months at a time before having to do a visa run.
as far as i know if you arrived on a one month visit visa this can be extended for a further month. After that you either have to be processing residency or work visas. If not then you have to leave the country.
