With or without family?

Hi all,
First thanks a lot for this wonderful forum. My question is about family. I've been offered a post with QP in Doha and will join in May. I'm married with 2 kids (4 and 1). We're weighing the pros and cons of mobilizing them with me at first, or after a couple of months. What do you think guys? BTW the employer is providing the housing and all. Thx

Certainly all degrees. Not sure about "designations." Your HR will know what's required for your RP visa.

Indeed I was told the attestation process is inevitable. I have a degree and 3 professional designations (accreditations), all related to my future work in Qatar. Do I need to attest only my highest degree (Masters), or everything including designations and bachelor...?

I'm afraid there are no shortcuts to the attestation process. Ask your HR for a very detailed, steep-by-step procedure, and follow it explicitly.

Thank you, the problem in Canada is we don't have a Qatar Embassy here, and I don't feel like sending them in the US as it may take forever. On a 2nd note, my highest grade was in France, do I need to attest it from a notary public here in Canada, or do I need to go to french embassy? I have some professional designations here, can they substitute the diplomas? Thx a lot

My family is with me and we've thoroughly enjoyed it. Qatar is a decent place to live, although like most decent places it has its peculiarities, irritating aspects, etc. Expat families are well catered for in term of schools, life style, shopping, etc. In fact, I would say that it is much better for families than single people.

Dono, the recruiter may not have discussed attestation of your documents but the HR in your new company should give you the procedure for completing this process. It can be lengthy and involve several embassies and governments! You will also need a police clearance. And you WILL want to do all these things before you come, no use going back!

Thank you all for the wonderful advice, and special nods to tinkerbell, that's was an awesome post. My recruiter didn't say anything about certifying documents, he just asked for copies. Do I absolutely need to do so? If yes, is a notary public sufficient, and what docs do I need to certify? Besides, for diplomas, do they need just one certified or all of them? Thx

We came as a family to Qatar. No problems at all. Got everything sorted out without any problems. You need to speak to your mandoob and HR..they should help you with sorting out legalities etc.

Bring your family. Qatar is wonderful for families and children. There is always some adjustment to a new environment for anyone in any place, but it is better that children are with their parents.

Hi

to clarify, alot of companies like the employee to come first for a month or so, not only to sort the formalities out - such as RP etc but they find it is less distracting to the employee than having to worry about the family as well as moving to a new country and starting a new job.

that being said, it all depends on how adaptable your family are to new situations and that is something only you can answer -some would prefer and 'advance party' so that everything is nice and settled and organised when they bring their children.

Smoke: 'anything can happen' ?

Formatted : 'some private [ taxi ] ' ?

Is it clear to 'dono'.......

By Formatted Soul• 13 Mar 2012 08:42

Thats what people normally do, they hire a car or use some private taxi for pickup and drop off...

Thanks for the advice. How about transportation during probation? I'm thinking of renting a car until everything is settled, then I can use the loan from the company, doable or any better idea?

And BTW, why do I have to log in twice every time???

MRST, how long before family joined?

By dono• 13 Mar 2012 08:07

Interesting points. Are there in the forum any who moved as a family (with kids), can you share your experience? Is it really that big deal to move together?

Clarify with HR, they will provide an Entry visa for your family too. They will provide you a temporary villa for three months. Meantime you can find another accommodation and RP and other formalities will be sorted out during this period.

Nothing to worry!

well not always .. my company gave me family status as per contract from day 1 and I had villa and everything before my family joined with my wife car waiting in front of the house.

By dono• 13 Mar 2012 07:37
dono

That changes a lot of things. Having heard about how things can be slow out there, I don't wanna see ourselves confined in a bachelor flat until they figure things out. We're really leaning towards moving together. My old one will start school only next year, she's presently at kindergarten, and I don't see a big deal of going through formalities together. Correct me if I'm mistaken. During the first months, we're planning to rent a car until the probation is over. Doable there?

Yup you will be considered as 'single/bachelor status' until your family doesnt join you and will be given the allowance of a bachelor and room in the bachelor accomodation...

Once your family joins you, you will be entitled for all the allowance of a 'Family status' person and also wil be provided a house/villa by the company.

By dono• 13 Mar 2012 07:21

Interesting stuff. Do you know how long does it take to get my residency and then them to join? And will I be considered on a Single status if I move there first? I mean for accomodation and allowances

well and there are many they give up and say this place is just not for me.. there are plenty of compromises to be taken and daily frustrations... Q-tel, QNB, Hospitals, Driving, parking, nice fresh vegetables, Getting something simple fixed or purchased..

So as said it is wise to come alone first, sweat out the summer and get your family to join you in October

Not with QP, but yes I have seen people not make it through their probation period. And you have to get your RP sorted out before you can bring your family anyway, and then your family visa and who knows how long that will take. So you are going to be busy when you first come over anyway.

By smoke• 13 Mar 2012 06:50

Relax dono, its not always about people getting laid off...what if YOU dont like the work environment? what if YOU dont find admissions in schools...and yeah what if YOU are laid off during the probation period? :P

You are moving to a new country you have no idea about, its not wise to just bring the family over without coming here and settling down yourself first.

By dono• 13 Mar 2012 06:47

What do you mean about things happening during probation. Have you seen people laid off during probation, and on what purpose?

Oh yeah you might also want to first complete your probation period as well coz anything can happen between that period.

If everything's taken care of...I'd suggest you come here first and settle in nicely, find out about admissions and schools for your kids and then bring them along. Its useless yanking them from school where ever they are just to know that u might have to wait till next semester to get admissions or something.
