Sponsorship system studies ‘delayed’
Qatar has delayed all studies related to sponsorship amendments, waiting to see the results in Kuwait and Bahrain which have abolished the system.
Labour Ministry undersecretary Hussein al-Mulla said that Qatar would try to avoid the “negative aspects” resulting from the move in the two neighbouring countries. He said a strategy was underway to encourage the nationals to be involved in the labour market. The strategy, which runs until 2016, includes measures to improve the living conditions of foreign workers and to establish a database. The official reiterated that firms having at least 500 workers on their payroll should have a doctor and a clinic, otherwise they would face legal action.
