Katara’s third annual El Meyna traditional pearl-diving competition for children kicked off yesterday at Katara Beach.

A total of 100 boys aged between 10 and  14 years were grouped into in nine teams each of which is accompanied by sailors and a captain.

The Peninsula reports that the Pearl diving competition started with “Al Dashah” contest which witnessed the attendance of parents and families of the young participants.

The competition will end tomorrow with the closing ceremony “Al Ghafal” which will be held on Katara beach at 4pm.

Katara General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti said: “Organizing this competition is driven by Katara’s keenness to link children and the youth to our great heritage and its noble values, so they follow the steps of our ancestors and founding fathers of the nation who set the example on how to demonstrate patience, perseverance and devotion.”

Ahmad Al Hitmi, Director of Beach Department at Katara, said: “We’ve made all arrangements to ensure safety of all taking part in this competition at all times so they have an unforgettable learning experience and fun at this traditional, cultural and religious event.”

Meanwhile, Katara will organize in cooperation with the Palestinian National Friendship Association the second Palestinian Heritage Festival on Sunday.

The festival will showcase important aspects of Palestinian heritage including clothes, food and arts. It will offer the public the opportunity to recognize the rich Palestinian customs and heritage which vary depending on regions.

It is part of a Katara’s strategy aimed at building bridges between different cultures and peoples and will kick off at 6.30pm at Katara Building No. 3.
