Justice?
DUBAI // A woman who was forced into prostitution after being lured to the country with the false promise of a decent job was today sentenced to a year in jail.

EK, a 29-year-old tailor from Uzbekistan, and her compatriot ET, 20, were both found guilty of prostitution by the Dubai Criminal Court and will be deported following their sentences.
The court found AD, the 48-year-old Uzbek who lured EK to the country, guilty of human trafficking charges and sentenced her to three years in prison to be followed by deportation. However, it cleared her compatriot, NS, 50, of aiding and abetting the trafficking.
The tailor came to Dubai after speaking with a woman in her home country who promised her a job with a monthly salary of more than US$1,000. When she arrived in December 2011 she met AD and was taken to an apartment where AD took her passport and provided her with a new, false passport under a different name.
A few days later she was taken to another apartment near Abu Hail shopping centre and told she would have to work as a prostitute for at least seven months to repay the cost of her plane ticket.
A number of prostitutes were in the apartment, including ET and DR. EK was forced to have sex with 15 to 20 men each day until January 17, when she ran away with DR, after tying some bedsheets together and climbing from the building's window. They headed to their consulate which then alerted authorities. DR also testified that she was lured to the country after being promised a job and was forced to have sex with up to 30 men a day. DR was not charged with prostitution.

I think they mostly come in on tourist or maids visas and then get pushed into prostitution. Moza, in the UAE there are free zones were expats can own bigger chunks of companies.
Brit, unfortunately, given the lax punishments (or complete lack there of) for rape and trafficking, you may be right. :(
Relaxation and soft punishments, to provide some peoples necessities.
and somebody helps them get visas to get into the country..... and since only a local can own 51% of any company...
Here's a wheeze of a theory. The light sentence is because the authorities don't want to do away with trafficking completely since it provides a service for the tourists / transients / populace.
what about Bahrain?
Just a tip of the iceberg. Dubai is the Capital of prostitution in the GCC.
Why not just legalize prostitution?
Great sentence for human trafficking. They could lure more women again after ONLY 3 years. Strange!
Cherrukkan. You're right. I don't know what is wrong with the UAE justice system because you do here about these types of cases all the time.
These girls were kidnapped, raped and held against there will and they are going to jail for a year???
And only 3 years for human trafficking!!!
People here complain about these types of sentences all the time, including the locals, but the powers that be don't seem to do anything about it.
shocking to know why mimi is so much concerned about prostitutes?
DR will be charged for Human traficking and forcing women for immoral activities, severe punishment than prostitution.
These are small fishes in the BIG pond
Yes Flor, lock up your daughters that is the answer! If they are in prison then they cannot be abused....
This is sad..very very sad! Justice?? Do these judges even know what that means? Seriously, that poor woman. Up until now I often wondered why some women in certain lands forced into trafficking don't just runaway to the police.I wondered what were they afraid of? Well....may God forgive me for ever misjudging them myself. I'll wonder no more!
Universal Human Rights to TRAVEL to be blamed for whatever unfortunate things that happened to these girls! Are they even documented working expats in Dubai or plain tourists?
france is the best example of civilized
We are all uncivilised, the selfish gene rules!
We all know that the Arab world is uncivilized. But it is the Western view. The Arabs think the same of the West.
Any civilised society would give the raped and abused girl citizenship, not send her back to a country that sold her in the first place.
As usual the story by GN is half cooked and doesnt make any sense. What happened to the girls in question is not known.
MM, There were (are) many similar cases in UAE.
Ok now I'm getting confused with the initials Brit. :S
Ok, so these stories are either telling of a travesty of justice OR a travesty of Journalism...or both.
not sure if the story says it all; but from what I read.. it is a mockery of justice!

The story still does not make sense :O(
WTF !!! instead of bringing the culprits to the books, the poor victim is been punished??
Not sure Wireless, but the DUBAI// before the story tell me it happened in Dubai.
No, in Qatar! Because this is QatarLiving.
Where it happened , In UK ?
I know Brit. The poor woman is forced to have sex with up to 20 men a day, escapes through a window and runs to the cops in the hopes that she will be able to escape the hell her life has become, only to be thrown in jail. Disgusting.
My bad.. I tried googling the story but not much..
It would be interesting to see how the judge came to the reasoning of not charging DR.. Perhaps it's because she admitted to prostitution ..
bollocks to law and justicE!
This is what you get when you abolish the sponsorship system!
One was Brit, but one was let go:
The court found AD, the 48-year-old Uzbek who lured EK to the country, guilty of human trafficking charges and sentenced her to three years in prison to be followed by deportation. However, it cleared her compatriot, NS, 50, of aiding and abetting the trafficking.
What is justice?
For some people, she should have killed herself rather than let herself be forced into this illegal act. Therefore it must be her fault.
And I always thought that the judges in the UK weere senile.. I wonder if those who were the ring leaders of trafficking were apprehended ?
The gist of the story is that two women who were forced into prostitution were thrown in jail.
Sucks to be a victim doesn't it.
EK was charged with prostitution and DR was not? How come? when they both ran to their consulate and reported the case? I am not sure but something is not just right...
LAW has NOTHING to do with JUSTICE! The law is what the ruling people deem good for THEM.
