Mega Get-Together

londonlad
By londonlad

People always keep complaining on this forum and others about lack of social scene.

Alternatively we organise get together specifically for Brits/Canadians/Americans/Indians/Punjabis/Pakistanis, etc etc.

The whole point of living in a place like Qatar full of expats is to explore other cultures and learn about them.

So I am trying to be *brave* and organise a MEGA Get-Together.

Ideally it should be free, but got no idea how to go about it, so here are few things I am thinking about.

1- Get people RSVP'ed via facebook or something like that (does any one have experience of that - PM me)
2- If we get RSVP of more than 100 or so people, then what kind of venues do we have available to cater for that many people? We have so many beaches, we should be able to a beach party / bbq/bonfire, etc (anyone got any ideas on that, pls PM me)
3- I understand that there could be a lot of single guys turning up, which mean people wont show up with their wives/ girlfriends and single girls would avoid (any ideas on how to tackle that situation? have bouncers/organisers/charge 300QAR entry fee for single guys to keep the riff raff out? - let me know).

And more importantly please help me organise this.

Cheers

Ok folks, a lot of people said they don't wake up that early. If its not early morning then for me it has to be only after Friday prayers, so lets pencil down 1:30 PM.

So here we are, open invitations to only those who can help us in organising the event.

- Those that have prior experience of organising events and/or

- are aware of various activities that we can plan which don't cost an arm and a leg.

Please come prepared with some info / print outs / ideas if possible. This meet up is not a social meet up but one to help us organise only.

Reminder:

Friday 19th, 1:30 PM Starbucks at City Center. PM me with your number and I will call you when I am there.

Regards,

I agree with what you say, but as Destiny is new in the town which is far away from her home / parents / friends / colleagues & different weather / food / new job / work / home etc ..

Ok a few have volunteered to help. I think its quite exciting to organise it in a place like Qatar.

Tinkerbell I agree with you, it wouldve been a doddle back home, but perhaps I have been warned too much about such impromptu events to become a c**kfest which means no decent couples/females would show up. If such fests were something to seek, all one needs to do it go to City center on a Friday. I am trying to do something different and maybe getting it wrong.

As a started. Next Friday the 19th - 9:00 AM in the morning, I am calling a meeting at Starbucks City Center for those who are interested in helping to organise. Will appreciate if some people turn up who have some prior experience of organising events or know of places /ideas for such meets.

Btw, am thinking of Al Khor beach as our first event?

why dont you organize a party on boat.... you can rent a big one and arrange the drinks foods snacks with them and charge 250 or 300 per person...also you can provide BBQ and make it from 4 pm to 10 or from 6 to 12 midnight. it doesnt have to be a real party i mean with only drinking alcoholic and stuff it could be regular as only for a people to have fun and meet each other. also to respect who dont like to drink alcohol or to be in such places like this.

I dont know just saying it might work if anyone would suggest anything related to the above and can adjust it...

Hey guys...............

I have repeatedly asked for help, but I get nowhere. I dont understand why is it so difficult and so many aspects to consider before organising a simple meet up.

Can someone take responsibility for the following:

1- Create a group on facebook purely for collecting RSVP.

2- Identify locations where we can go to (ie, beaches, parks, etc) where some facilities are available such as food/snacks, etc.

3- Come up with a voting system on facebook page as to where would people like to go for next event and then organise booking with relevant people (where needed).

One idea I have is of desert safari including dune bashing, dinner, belly dancing (maybe) and then spending night in the tent. Does anyone know of any company offering this, if yes then we should try to organise that as a first event.

Cheerios.. dont leave it all on me man, think of me just as a firestarter, but need other like minded people to carry the flame...

a few members started going out for coffee, then bowling and dinner.

next we did billiards, Thursday night outs, beach picnic...it was like everyday there's a reason to go out.

Mondays would be coffee/shiesha nights

Wednesday would either be bowling

Thursday would be meet up at the bar

Alternate fridays would be beach or inland sea picnic....but those were the days.

These QLERS who used to spearhead and join these get together eventually moved on and outgrew QL...some had their own groups or cliques outside QL and still go out to have fun. Some settled down, have families now and/or moved out of Qatar. Some are still around peeping on QL in between their daily humdrums, posting/commenting now and then.

Why they/we don't join or initiate anymore, due to reasons...

If the newbies want to do a get-together, go ahead and have fun. :D

Going out...

I found this old post.

This is a good idea. Let's do what Joe suggested back in 2007.

Submitted by JoeKanuck on Wed, 09/05/2007 - 9:14am General

Good day, folks. Last night I was thinking that not every event has to be planned. There are people going out and doing stuff or just getting together, all the time. Sometimes, they're looking for company.

My suggestion is that we have a thread where people who are spontaneously doing something, can invite people out.

For instance, if you feel like a movie or coffee or a drive to the dunes or whatever, and you'd like some company, post what you're planning and when, and if someone wishes to join in, they can.

This wouldn't be a substitute for the planned events but more of a way for people to casually get together and kill some time.

Just a thought.

Joe

What if no single men come because of this fee? who then pays for all the food, rental, gifts etc? Why the people here at QL that have been there done that social get together's don't assist us newbies how to do a social time out and just do it? And what if most of the people are singles here at QL? we cant be unfair here.

We want single guys and single women to feel welcome but also we should have meet-ups for couples only. but what to do?

let's say example: 2 times a month we have this QL social met up time, tomorrow night is for couples only, then next time is open for everyone. Suggestion: keep the fee for everyone, but as couple's it would be one entry fee for each couple.

My suggestion would be keep it clean, and give space for couples to get to know other couples. Whenever there are singles, it will not be comfortable here in Qatar for couples who will want to have some space to mingle with other couples, and would feel the need to protect his partner from being stared at, or bothered by some singles which is human nature. The couples wont feel comfortable socializing away from their partner if there are singles around to advance on them.

Having a partner with me, would give me a chance to go talk to other ladies, and my guy would not have to worry about other guys trying to come up to me since everyone would know I am with my husband, and the mood would be fun.

I undertand there are good single men out there, but there are also some men that will pay to get in just to be around, or see other girls, or worse other people's wife's.

just sayn. There is always a cover charge at the clubs here for men. So don't go if you dont want to pay.

I suggest pm RSVP if you want to meet at a public place for coffee, tea desert, or other fun place for first time, then have big event later after everyone has had a chance to get to know each other.

Salam

By londonlad• 19 Sep 2012 23:02

Ok so here is the deal.

The reason I am organising this is because I cannot find something like this happening already, otherwise I would have just joined.

Those who think I am being unfair, they should not come at all. I have heard of many horror stories from females in a few of my British meetups (like guys not taking NO for an answer, pestering, even ignoring the female's partner and butting in to start a conversation and worst of all coming close and feeling up *which is ridiculous*).

So keep it clean, couple friendly and fun. I will be keeping an entrance fee for single men. Feel free to not show up if you don't like the idea, go for your other usual social activities.

Now I just need help with:

- Identifying a good activity and contact to book it.

- Ideas on how to enforce this entry cost for single men only. If it was UK, I could list it on groupon and they will collect via paypal, or put it via paypal directly. Any idea on how we can do it here as I dont want to deal with cash and be busy collecting while not mingling.

In case people are wondering, what will happen with the money. Well, we will buy food, gifts, etc with that money on the same day - open to any other suggestions?

I checked with a hotel for booking pool-side or beach side area, and they want an advance for that, so maybe we can RSVP first, collect money from single men and perhaps some token (less) cost from other participants as well to do such bookings.

BTW: If anyone has problems with single men having to pay, then they should challenge all the clubs and bars (like Irish Harp) who have a ladies night when entry and drinks are free for ladies, but all men have to pay entry/membership fees.

mimiloves2sing said "How can anyone in Qatar just live, laugh, and have fun in Qatar with others, without all this I won't go if he/she goes. or if that nationality is going, I won't mentality???"...I would say have a meet up or meet people the first time without any ifs and buts and we would know whom to take forward and whom to drop. End of the day we are not kids that someone would or could do something unwanted, moreso it would a group and more importantly we are in Qatar which is a much safer place comparatively. By Prism• 19 Sep 2012 12:35

"We need married couples, single girls, ...riff-raff single men out "... if I am not wrong single girls do tend to act as lechers too, in QL parlance called gold diggers, so why arent they being suggested to be kept out. It can be a ONLY MARRIED COUPLES meet up or the married guys want some advance tie ups when their wives are away on vacations. So much for the decency ...ROFL. Guess, singles like me can be infinite times more decent than quite many married guys who suddently become SINGLE for few days in a year...lol

I doubt when any person comes to me with a proposal and 'he himself' suggests to collect money for doing it ..specially when / which involves a big group who never aksed 'him' anything to arrange at the first place ....

I am not generalising ..

I totally agree with you. I find it very hard here in Qatar to do what is easy in USA. So, yes, it is a daunting task, but well appreciated, atleast from me. I don't have experience in Qatar since I am new here.

P.S. Grandpa & grandma's uncles and aunties etc are fun to have at beach BBQ's too!!

By Xena• 19 Sep 2012 11:32

being the one who started the QL Social Group, I talk from experience when I say it is single handedly the most frustrating task ever....

Everyone wants different things; Some people won't come if certain people are there; Trying to get anyone in one place to organise is a mission; and unfortunately the number of single guys will ALWAYS out number the single girls.... AND if you want to keep the ladies coming to the events, you have to find a way to keep the lechers away and the decent guys attending.

In short, its a pretty thankless task!

By smoke• 19 Sep 2012 11:24

"which should keep the riff-raff single men out"

Stand by for some serious flack for making statements like that. Next you will be saying all single men should be banned from entering mall's on weekends.

By londonlad• 19 Sep 2012 01:18

Ok folks. This one is proving to be a lot more difficult than it sounds. Looks like the main challenges are:

- Someone who knows the ropes around Doha, knows how to get Dhows booked, sailing boats, jetski, speedboats, which beaches can be booked for a certain number of participants, etc....

- Some way to filter and keep the group sane and more balanced. We need married couples, single girls, but what about single guys...........so far all PMs I got was from single guys willing to volunteer, nothing against them but if the ratio tilts too much towards single guys, then the whole event could be a disaster with no repeats.

Anyone got any ideas? I am thinking of charging 200/300 QAR which should keep the riff-raff single men out - the money can go towards the bills for the activities. I know it sounds so bad, but that seems to be the only way. If we still get too many single guys then raise the price until we reach decent single men who know how to respect a woman even when asking them for a date.

Please suggest any other ideas? and dont suggest filtering by nationalities (as one of the PM suggested) cause that's even more stupid than charging single guys.

Why the single guys to be penalised ?

It may be other way around - who ever comes with a woman should pay 600 QR to get the riff - raff in.

QLSG one of the groups on QL did lots of BBQ events and also coffee meets, trips to the camel farm, get together off late this group has also become dormant.

Off late lots of Trolls and users with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde syndrome is the reason many don't like to mingle and jingle like they used to previously.

By timebandit• 2 Sep 2012 05:35

Good luck. It's hard enough to organise a coffee meet these days on QL.

Apparently that's what happens at most events, unless they are pricey. Again, not speaking from experience, just heard of it.

Sounds awesome, but why do you think single guys would turn out in force?
