Qatar Airways - a bit out of touch with Qatar

I was surprised to see in the October 2008 issue of "Oryx", Qatar Airways' in-flight magazine, that they recommend that while in Doha you "head to the dhow-shaped complex of Al Bandar Restaurant where three side-by-side alfresco restaurants offer a world of different flavours".

Sounds very nice you might think, and it was. I went there when I first came to Doha 2 years ago and it was one of the best places I've ever eaten here - both for the food and the location.

The problem is though, it was knocked down about 18 months ago by order of the government. (An awful decision in my opinion. The new versions in the souq aren't a patch on what these ones were.)

Anyway, it's good to see Qatar Airways keeps up with what's going on in it's own country.

QA is out of touch with reality sometimes. I was in Syria during Eid and out flight time stated 4:10 pm but they made a mistake with the time changes and the flight was actually 5:10. When we informed them they said they did it on purpose to make sure everyone go there on time... wt....? Nice try at covering up.

Maybe they haven't, but don't you think they should? Or at least ask someone based here?

kunjar - Plenty of other threads discussing that crap. Don't hijack this thread.

Oryx is now run out of a Dubai publishing house. Those people probably haven't been to Qatar in while.

@kunjar, relax, don't bust a nut

notfromhere - Yep, it still has the blurb about Qatar National Museum, which "recently underwent an award winning 3 year restoration".

EG - don't be ridiculous.

Xena - Totally agree. It's such a shame they moved them. I heard that when I.M Pei was approached to design the Museum of Islamic Art he said he would only do it if it had no other buildings directly around it, so it could be seen properly. Hence why it's built on a bit of land jutting into the bay, and I expect that's why Al Bandar was knocked down.

baldrick - They should know by doing a bit of research themselves!

And another thing I noticed from the same article - where is the "Olympic-size" ice rink in City Center? I've only seen the piddly-little one in the middle of the mall.

To be fair, we probably shouldn't take an article that recommends going to Qube ("Doha's club du jour") too seriously.

Crap airline and crappy airport staff! Shows how out dated and over rated this airline is that they cant even keep up with pea size country's info! phufffff!

Did you write to QA about this? Just a thought. Y'know, if no one tells them they are wrong how will they know?

Did you Google it first?

the souq version just doesn't have the same ambiance as the cornishe version had....

Why do you say that EG? I didn't realize pointing out mistakes in Oryx was a bannable offence in Qatar.

Do they still have the blurb about the National Museum, or did they finally figure out that it's been closed for several years?

....I miss Al Bandar....
